As you probably already know, May is National Bike Month. National Bike Month celebrates the benefits of biking and encourages people to get out on two wheels. With the month coming to a close, one way to stay in the biking spirit is to jump into a local group ride. It's a great way to challenge yourself, meet new people, improve your cycling skills, and have fun!
Most local bike shops offer different levels of group rides. The rides can range from a social no-drop ride, where no rider is left behind, to an all-out hammer fest, where you better be ready to go fast! One of our favorite local bike shops, Mellow Johnny's, offers group rides for all levels of cyclists. Check out their page here for a schedule of weekly events and rides.
Want to know the best part about starting and ending your ride from Mellow Johnny's? Two words. Juan Pelota. Juan Pelota Cafe serves up some of the best coffee in town, and is the perfect place to grab a pre or post ride treat. They even carry Thunderbird bars!
Here are some tips and rules of the road to help you stay safe and have fun on your next group ride:
- Wear a helmet
- Bring a flat repair kit
- Don't wear headphones
- Bring water and nutrition (aka a Thunderbird bar!)
- Use hand signals and communicate
- Hold your line and be predictable
Now get out there and have fun!
